Abstract

Tuberculosis has become a global health challenge, including in Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of pursed-lip breathing exercises in optimizing physiological variables in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis undergoing routine treatment in the Papar Health Center, Kediri. The study design used was pretest-posttest with control group, with measurements of pulse rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation (SpO2), and dyspnea score before and after the intervention for 4 weeks. A total of 17 respondents participated in this study. The results of the analysis showed a significant decrease in pulse rate (p = 0.007) and respiratory rate (p <0.001), as well as an increase in SpO2 (p = 0.011). Dyspnea scores at rest and activity also decreased significantly (p <0.001). These findings indicate that pursed-lip breathing exercises significantly help improve respiratory function and reduce symptoms of shortness of breath in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Thus, pursed-lip breathing can be an effective non-pharmacological intervention to support the management of pulmonary tuberculosis.
